Children of the Nile Section
We've been busy, as you will soon notice, collecting lots of information for the upcoming Egytian game, Children of the Nile, from places like the official forums; and gathered it all in a little compendium. You can find it here

You can also find the Heaven Games interview with Chris Beatrice there, and some new screen shots. Yes, new screenshots!

The current design is still a temporary one, so don't be too disappointed if everything doesn't quite work yet.

Many thanks to the Heaven Games team comprising Jayhawk, Pecunia, EJay and Granite Q, and special thanks of course to Chris Beatrice of Tilted Mill.

February's Poseidon Competition 'The Ridge'
Our resident contest wizard: Granite Q has been working his fingers to the bone again. This time to provide a neat little Poseidon Competition to chase away the gloom of winter with some mediterranean sun.
"To the north of the great river lies a tall tree-covered ridge; no-one knows what lies beyond. Many have tried to scale the ridge, but no-one has yet succeeded. If a way across it can be found, surely a great city could be built there, able to house as many people as possible".
The Competition closes at 12 midnight ET(US), 22nd February 2004.

Downloads backlog
With a humble and well meant apology, I'd like to announce that all files submitted in the past five weeks have been approved.

Some of you may know Angel Draco has stepped down from his position as Downloads Angel, and it seems I still need to get used to checking the new uploads myself.

However, the service should be restored to normal.

HeavenGames Demographics Survey
Can you spare a couple of minutes to help HeavenGames? We need people to answer our Demographics Survey. This will help us improve the quality of advertising which will, in turn, help raise money to enable HeavenGames to stay online for a long time.

The survey is completely anonymous and the data you submit won't be connected to you in any way. Each person should only complete it once.

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Gamespy's 25 most underrated games
And in at number 25 is Impressions' City Building Series (although they seem to have forgotten Emperor). Nice write-up by people who have obviously played the games seriously. Maybe it will encourage people to give them a go.

'These were terrific games, you know, the "Holy cow is the sun up already?" type of PC games that totally engross you for days on end.'

'If all you know of city building games is SimCity, you owe it to yourself to get your hands on one of Impressions' masterpieces.'

New Virus Warning
There is a new virus that takes advantage of a recent problem discovered with certain version of Microsoft Windows. More information can be found here. It dupes users into thinking they are installing a security update, when in fact it isn't. See screenshot. If you haven't updated your system, please do so at Window Update.

If you opened the attachment, it attempts to disable various anti-virus programs (like Norton Anti-Virus) as well as various firewalls (like ZoneAlarm). It will try to intercept your email username, password, and mail server settings, thus using your ISP's mail server to spread itself. It will attempt to send itself to everyone on your address book through email, as well as attempt to spread through KaZaA, shared directories, IRC, and newsgroups. It will modify your registry, add files to your computer. In short, your computer and possibly your ISP access will be thoroughly screwed by the time the worm is done installing itself on your computer, so it'll be best if you avoid getting infected so you don't have to deal with the resulting mess.

As always, don't open email attachments from people you don't know, even if it claims to be from Microsoft.

Of worms, MSBlaster, and DirectX
If your computer is affected by the MSBlaster worm or its variants; or your computer hasn't been patched against the worm, we urge you to patch your computer as soon as possible.
You can find out how on this page at Microsoft.

Also, it's highly advised you patch against another security hole that's asking for trouble: There's a problem with DirectX that allows a virus, trojan, or any malicious programs to infect your computer by simply playing an infected MIDI file. This affects all DirectX versions from 5.2 all the way up to 9.0. Thus, you can be infected by simply viewing an email or webpage that has an auto-playing MIDI file. You can find out more and how to patch this on this page at Microsoft.
At least one other major media outlet has reported this.

If you haven't installed all the critical updates in Windows Update, it's probably a good idea to do so now.

Giggles in City Building Heaven
After mouse's sad resignation a few days ago, we needed someone to fill her shoes.

We're not sure what size his feet are, but many of us have happy images of our newest cherub in leathers. We're happy to welcome Cherub Rocky to City Building Heaven where he will be helping Jayhawk moderate The Town Square and making people feel welcome. He'll also be lending a hand where needed in the Help Forums.

You can congratulate him here

Poseidon Competition
June's competition in Heaven Games City Building Competition Corner is a Poseidon Atlantean game called Twin Peaks.

"Some people tried to make their home in the valley between the twin peaks, but the dreaded Cyclops lives there and frightened them away. Maybe new adventurers could settle on the hilltops fairly safely; they could summon Odysseus to kill the Cyclops, and build a thriving prosperous city".

More information and the link to the game page can be found in the Twin Peaks Forum Thread in City Builders Competition Corner.

Another promotion, and I can hear giggles
Please give a warm welcome to Nero Would, our youngest cherub.

Nero Would will be active helping out in the Game Help of Zeus and later on Emperor. We all know how wonderfully informative his posts are, and I'm really glad he accepted the job.

You can congratulate him in The Town Square.

Downloads Server Blues
Most of you will have noticed the server trouble we had yesterday, and sadly our troubles aren't over yet. The Downloads Server (which was hit hardest yesterday) will be shut down sometime during today.

This will take at least an hour, so it's prudent not to upload any files during the cause of today.

Mixed Blessings
In case you missed the news on Emperor Heaven...

I think, that's the best way we can describe this bit of news. On the one hand I have the sad duty to tell you we will be losing a valued staff member. BobT, known for his ceaseless work in the Zeus and Emperor scenario forums has handed in his stubby little wings.

The reason to do so, however, is one of the best, as he's accepted a position as Quality Assurence Tester at BreakAway Games. So don't be surprised if you see his name in blue, rather than the familiar green. He will try to stay in touch with us, though.

Bob's not the only one to have received such an offer, Merepatra too is now working for BreakAway. She, however, hopes she has time enough to be both working for them and being an Angel at HeavenGames. So we will be enjoying her skills for at least a while longer.

I wish both of them tons of fun with their new jobs.

There's a thread in The Town Center where you can congratulate them yourself.

Poseidon contest at I-ChallengeU
For December I-ChallengeU is running a Poseidon contest, The Armories

Since we, the Atlantean people, in accordance to the Symphonia Ithikos, begun to avoid internal conflicts, peace started reigning over Atlantis, and our cities became a symbol of glory in the world. We have been trading with our neighbor cities for many years, and these good relations have brought great richness to our people. But now neighbor cities from the North and South of Atlantis have begun to look towards us as their enemies, and the Atlanteans fear that they may attack us at any moment.
Our leader, Atleon, fears that the Atlantean army has not the necessary strength to stop the invading forces if they attack, and asks you to found a city from where you can repel the attacking forces from the south.
In your city you will have access to valuable goods that you may export to afford the imports of the bronze you will need to produce the armour needed by Atlantean army.
'You must hurry up!', out leader says, 'I fear that some of our enemies may attack soon!'.

For those who would also like to play in China this month ICU are also running an Emperor contest, Leantimes, details here

Is that a giggle I hear before me?
It's been a while, but the City Builder sites have decided to increase their staff count once more.

We'd like you to welcome someone most of you will know from his designing of fiendishly clever and difficult scenarios. As such he will join us as, how shall we put it, Contest Cherub. With his help we'd like to go back to the days when we could offer you the odd City Builder Contest.

Please welcome Granite Q as the latest addition to an excellent team.

Wargamer Previews Emperor
Always a source of well-written, in-depth reviews, has posted their preview of Emperor along with several screenshots. The reviewer was very impressed with the game and summed it up this way:
The Emperor game stands on the shoulders of giants and is the most sophisticated and elegant of its line. The teaming of Breakaway Games (Cleopatra expansion for Pharaoh), with the Impressions Games great city building game engine seems destined to result in a "win-win" product. Emperor is still in beta and has been undergoing significant playtesting by a large community of devoted gamers and testers. When released, it I expect it will exceed the high expectations of players who already enjoy this game system and will hopefully thrill a whole new generation of new city builders as well.
You can read the full preview here.
