Barren Lands

Author File Description
David Masters / Nightwolf

Minimap:
Cadmea has very few resources, and quite a few enemies... not to mention hostile gods. 9 episodes (3 colony, 6 parent), very challenging. Large invasions.

Chloe this is really a good one - but how, oh please tell me how, I can get these cheesy cities to give me some wine and/or marble? I'm wasting away here waiting, not wanting to ask because then my rep. goes down major points. Is there something I'm missing or do I just keep giving them freebies?
Annie What a super adventure but it's really hard. Just taking a breather from "Martial Lore"! Whew! I had to brush up on my raiding techniques but it's great fun.
RobP Great Adventure. The way to get items from other cities is to build one wharf and enlist it and help from the parent city to steal the items from the other cities.
[-MaGz-] I don't understand, I thought this is a 7 episode adventure. After the first set of goals that i completed, it just stopped. No more goals. Then I have to restart. Did I make a mistake in installing?

Playability: 4
The objectives were basic and, while several required some problem-solving (such as an inabilty to buy or create needed resources and how to turn a profit) they were fun and not impossible. Each chapter made me feel as though I'd accomplished something. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 (as I originally intended) is that I seem to have become stuck on chapter 5 (I think). More on that in notes.

Balance: 5
The game was a perfect balance between 'I have nothing' and 'I get everything'. In the first chapter I struggled with the lack of fleece and need for workers, but after a restart it worked out fine.

Creativity: 5
Some of the twists were rather...brutal, but enjoyable. Especially in the Symphalus colony. I wanted to laugh and cry when the event happened, and another restart was required.

Map Design: 4
The map, despite it's utter lack of purple, was still very playable and not too difficult to work around the various mountains/marsh spots. One thing I didn't like was my inability to make bridges in my parent city until chapter 5, but that simply added to the challenge.

Story/Instructions: 4
I thank God you put in the added note of (Get the fleece!) LOL! The game would have been brutally difficult if I'd chosen a different colony first! The story was great also - I especially liked the explanation for how Ephesus sells armor and buys sculpture :D

Additional Comments:
I noticed only one bug, though I didn't mind it at all. After completing the quest to retrieve Hippoltye's girdle for Artemis, Ephesus (my colony) sent itself a gift of 15 armor. I don't know if it was meant to be from a different city, or another colony I had yet to make, but thought I'd point it out.

Also, I seem to be stuck on chapter 5. I need to acquire 5 trading partners, and I assume the only way to do so is to conquer them. When I received the first 'Military Decline at ...' messages I did not have much of an army and did not attack. But now, with my full army, I cannot conquer any city, even when its down to one shield. It's been about 20-30 years (if not longer) since I started chapter 5 - can I expect more military decline messages or should I just restart?

Thank you for making this map, I found it most enjoyable and will definitely download more of your work.

One of the greatest adventures I've played around here so far!
With all those raids required to get goods I felt like a viking from the Viking series.
As you described, lots of invasions, what made the last level very fun to play :D

Just one bug for me, last level says I need 15 trade partners, but theres only 14 in the world. Couldnt finish it. Otherwise great adventure, I will save to play again another day :D
