Lord of the Rings
This isn't my first created aventure, but the first one that I have submitted. I created this because of how much I love Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and because I am quite frustrated that the only Rings games that are available are essentially action games or RTS. To the other Tolkien fans out there I had to alter some of the story (for obvious reasons) so don't kill me. Anyway, some needed information to be able to fully enjoy the adventure.
1. I had to modify the zeuseventmsg.txt so I recommend that you back up the orginal in the zeus/model directory into another directory and then copy the zeuseventmsg.txt that I have included to your zeus/model directory. This will change the names of some of the Gods and several of the quests and some of three of the heroes.
2. The heroes in this adventure are Aragorn (Odysseus), Eowyn
(Atalanta) and Frodo (Theseus). The monster is the Witch King (Harpy).
3. Some of the text in the episode introductions is there because my wife wanted to play this and she is still a beginning city-builder. So some of the advice can be ignored if you are a veteran city-builder.
4. The colonies are numbered in the order that they should be played. While it is still winnable if you don't play them in order, the story is written (as are some of the events) so that it makes the most sense if they are played in order.
5. As I said, this is the first adventure that I have submitted so any questions, comments or advice is greatly appreciated. You can either post in the adventure comments screen or email me at Wilson6065@msn.com |

Playability: 4
Overall, I had fun playing this adventure, thank you for that! I gave it a 4 to differ it from some really memorable ones I played earlier. Usually I quit when I see a goal of 12k people, but here I kept going because the map looked nice and it was a challenge. This one would probably be a 5 if there wasn't for the facts mentioned in the following categories.
Balance: 4
Knowing the story (actually the movies), I expected this to be a very hard adventure (I somehow missed the part where you said it was created for your wife who is still a beginner). So I played on titan. For me, it was just too easy. I can't remember the last time I had millions of drachmae, but it just made it possible to bribe every attack, and buy everything even if you can produce it yourself. I managed to pass some of the earlier parent city episodes in a minute or two (because I already had everything when the episode started). Then again, in the penultimate episode I had to wait for what felt like ages for a quest to appear. Also the tributes were just too generous in my humble opinion :) All this together made the game less interesting for me than it could have been. But still, I'm giving a 4 because you did say it was made for beginners.
Creativity: 5
OK, so I usually begin this category saying how it's hard to be creative in this game (other than through map design and story, which are separate categories), we have seen everything already etc. But wow, I actually experienced something new this time! I had no idea you could change the text file, giving different names to heroes and summaries for quests. It was fun playing with Frodo and the gang! :) I think more people should become aware of this possibility. It really gave this adventure that special something.
Map Design: 5
This was great! The colonies were nice, but the parent city is really something. Especially since I had to use almost all of the land by the end. The way you build cities makes defense much easier (as there is but a single way for attacking armies to move, and if you put your palace at the end they need to march a long way).
Story/Instructions: 5
As the name says, it's the Lord of the Rings. I liked it :)
Additional Comments:
Some minor issues I experienced:
1) In Hobbiton, a certain hero you named Frodo actually killed a monster (Litch King). I don't think this was supposed to happen. But the monster wasn't very aggresive anyhow so it didn't impact the difficulty of the game.
2) In the Edoras colony it looks like you wanted to make a single way uphil. However, there is another way a bit to the right. It lookes like a cliff, but still people somehow manage to climb it. It doesn't impact the game as it is very close to where you intended the entrance to be.
3) As of the episode Battle of Pelennor I can again build the Altar of Olympus and the Major Shrine to Hera, although they were build previously and still intact.
I have no idea whether you still read these comments, but just to sum it up - thank you for the fun couple of hours! :)
